Scott and Cheema take a brief break from their wrestling match, which in itself was a brief break from their snowshoeing trek through the Assiniboine Park 'Monkey Trails'.

Philosophy

Don't let the heading fool you - we're not really that interested in philosophy. Well, maybe that depends what kind of mood we're in.  We suppose that we need some philosophers in the world in order to try to figure out why we're doing what we're doing (Kierkegaard and Nietzsche's interest in people's use of diversion to escape from boredom comes to mind), but for the most part we're content to simply "do".  That's not to say that we don't want to put some thought into what we're doing.

A few years ago Scott & Deanna found themselves increasingly busy with their employment.  Although for the most part they both enjoyed their work, they wanted to reclaim the time necessary to do other things.  As they've often said to friends, they found themselves in a position where they could afford to eat out most nights, but they craved having the time to do some proper grocery shopping and make a good home-cooked meal instead.  They also wanted to get more adequate training in.  They never really stopped getting a ride in here and a run in there (amounting to one or two decent workouts a week), but they wanted to be more consistent.

So, they decided to try to make do with one full-time salary, in the hope that they would then be free to eat and train better.  It's been a few years since they began this experiment and so far so great.  They're thrilled with the results.

This site, and TheTrainingCoop in more general terms, is a partial reflection on their attempt at focusing on training.  Things have grown a little since Scott & Deanna started the site and a couple more members have come on board.  Obviously all of us do more on any given day than just focus on training.  We all enjoy having our hands in a few other things and exploring other areas of life, but we've decided that we should place a substantial emphasis on trying to do a good job of life's basics, which to us includes eating and exercising well.  Fortunately we find ourselves in a position to be able to try to do just that (e.g. we're not consumed with major health problems, we earn enough not to worry about the heating bill, we live in a country of freedom and opportunity, etc.) so we're going to focus on the basics.  That, we suppose, is what you could call a part of our philosophy.

This picture was taken just before a performance of "Ballet in the Park", which Scott and Deanna kayaked to.  It took 2 hours to paddle upstream to the venue, and 20 minutes to paddle the same distance downstream to get back home.
