Benevolence
"Anyone
who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and
anyone who has food should do the same." (Luke 3:11, Today's NIV)
We're not in the normal habit of sharing our clothes with others (I guess
occasionally we'll do something like lend a spare, clean t-shirt to
a friend after a muddy mountain bike ride) but we think the
principle quoted above is applicable in various situations, and
regardless of faith, culture, political affiliation, etc.
To paraphrase and personalize the quote: We've got more than
we need so why not share with those who have less?
This is the simple principle
behind a recent decision made by Scott & Deanna. We earn
enough shop credit at Olympia Cycle & Ski thru Scott's development
and maintenance of the
shop website to keep our
personal fleet of bikes well spec'd and maintained, and still
have credit left over. So, we've committed to donating half of
our website earnings to charity.
Based on current earnings
that means we'll try to identify two or three charities a year who
can make use of what we have to offer (that is, merchandise
available thru the bike shop), and donate a package of merchandise
such as a few bikes and helmets, a few ski packages, or maybe a slew
of accessories, according to the charity's needs. For now
we're mainly identifying registered charities so that (a) the
mission we are donating to is formally defined and (b) the
application of our donation is somewhat transparent. We also
don't mind that donating to a registered charity means we can
receive a tax receipt for the value of the merchandise donated.
And of course where possible we'll continue to help with the
occasional charity ride, or volunteer to help at local races and
events.
As we offer our support to others we'll post links to their
organizations here so you can check out their causes. If
anyone browsing this page knows of a charity who might benefit from
our offerings feel free to
pass on that info to us - we'd be
happy to check them out ourselves. |

Happy cyclists fill the streets
of Winnipeg. Maybe if we continue to do our own little
part in contributing to cycling and skiing causes in our local
community, and others do the same, we'll see more smiling faces
on the road and trails in the days, and years, to come. |
